When I first started going to the gym, nobody told me the unwritten rules of gym etiquette. Here’s what I learned the hard way – so you don’t have to.

Always Re-Rack Your Weights
Leaving dumbbells or plates scattered around isn’t just messy – it’s disrespectful to everyone else training. Put weights back where they belong once you’re done, every single time.
Don’t Hog Equipment
If you’re resting between sets, be aware of others waiting. On waiting days, ask if someone wants to “work in” between your sets, especially on popular machines like the bench press or squat rack.
Wipe Down Equipment After Use
Sweat happens- that’s normal. But always wipe down the bench or machine after you’re done. Most gyms provide wipes or spray bottles for this exact reason.
Don’t Give Unsolicited Advice
Even if you mean well, walking up to a stranger to correct their form can come across as rude. Unless someone asks, let people train the way they want to.
Respect Personal Space
Avoid setting up your equipment too close to someone else, and never walk directly in front of someone mid-set. A little awareness goes a long way in a crowded gym.
None of these rules are complicated, but they make the gym a better place for everyone. A little respect and awareness go a long way – for you and everyone else training around you.
Why Gym Etiquette Matters
Good gym etiquette isn’t about rigid rules – it’s about basic respect and awareness in a shared space. When everyone follows these simple habits, the gym becomes a more comfortable, efficient, and welcoming place for people of all experience levels. Whether you’re a beginner or have been training for years, practicing good gym etiquette makes the experience better for everyone around you.
